This landlocked Southern African country is the quintessential safari destination. With massive private game reserves and national parks, Botswana boasts a multitude of habitats, from arid acacia thornveld to lush wetland swamps and of course, the country’s crown jewel, a massive inland delta oasis amidst the Kalahari desert known as the Okavango Delta.
Here, a long-standing tradition of luxury lodges offer possibly the most exclusive safari in Southern Africa, with a distinct effort being made on minimizing the human footprint by keeping visitor numbers lower than in adjacent countries. Prices as a result can be slightly higher than elsewhere, but the unique ecosystem of the Delta more than compensates by providing spectacular wildlife action. This can be observed from a vehicle, on foot, on horseback, or from a dugout canoe know as a Mokoro. Renowned for its photographic safaris, the Okavango is one of the best places to encounter and observe large predators, especially the elusive leopard and the endangered African wild dog.
The rest of the country does not disappoint either; the more arid Central Kalahari Game Reserve is well-known as one of the largest wilderness areas on the continent and is extremely rich in flora and fauna. In the north, the Khwai, Mababe, Savuti, Linyanti and Chobe areas are home to some of the highest concentrations of African elephant and large lion prides as well as their associated prey. The large river systems and adjacent floodplains and savanna can be visited almost year-round with a definite peak season from June to October. An absolute must for first-timers and experienced safari-goers alike.
Key Points:
-Main attractions: the Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari, incredible predator viewing, low vehicle density
-Best visited: June-November
-Suggested stay length: 10-14 days
-Suggested traveler: True wilderness buffs, travellers seeking the perfect blend of authentic nature, comfort and adventure
