One of the most sparsely populated countries on the planet, Namibia combines dramatic moonlike landscapes with unique desert-adapted wildlife. Over twenty percent of the country is national park including the entire 1600 km long coast, known as the Skeleton Coast for the hundreds of shipwrecks that liter the coastline. While most of Namibia is extremely arid and the Namib desert boasts some of the largest and oldest dunes in the world, the northern part of the country is home to a number of resident desert-adapted species including elephant and lion.
The most famous of the National Parks, Etosha, is renowned for its sightings of black rhino, lions, and large herds of antelope at waterholes especially in the drier months of the year. A host of lodges, camping sites and tour operators make Namibia easily accessible to tourists with any kind of budget.
Key Points:
-Main attraction: mind-blowing landscapes and wide open spaces, rare desert-adapted species
-Best visited: May-October
-Suggested stay length: 9-14 days
-Suggested traveler: Return visitors to Africa, solitude seekers
